The Best Date Ever (Washington, DC)
Several weeks ago, Pius and I set out to create our best DC date ever – one full day filled with as many of our favorite things around the city as we could squeeze in.
Deciding on our first stop was easy. We headed to Dupont Circle, an iconic spot in the nation’s capital, but also one that is highly meaningful to us personally. Following dinner on our first date, we had sat on a bench near the fountain, talking for hours and hours. It took nothing short of a summer rainstorm to finally force us to say goodnight!
In addition to reliving our first date at the fountain, we dropped by Kramerbooks just north of the Circle. As you might have guessed, Kramerbooks is a fabulous bookstore; but it's also a bar and café. You simply can’t call yourself a true Washingtonian until you’ve been!
After skimming the table of new releases, we headed to another favorite neighborhood: Chinatown. We grabbed salads from a nearby haunt and brought them with us to the National Portrait Gallery. Have lunch at the art museum? Yes, indeed! You can eat at the Kogod Courtyard, a glass-covered indoor/outdoor space that connects the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. Complete with natural sunlight and free Wi-Fi, it is truly lovely!
Having polished off the final bites of our salads, we took a quick elevator ride to the third floor of the American Art Museum. Our destination? The Luce Center. In addition to housing an impressive 3,500 pieces of art, the Luce Center offers seating, free Wi-Fi, and free coffee and tea most weekday afternoons. It is truly a gem in the heart of the city!
By the time we finished our hot beverages, it was about 3:00 pm, which could only mean one thing: happy hour at Tryst. This hip Adams Morgan coffee shop by day, cool bar/lounge by night has awesome happy hour specials six days a week!
We let the happy buzz from our afternoon wine kick in before heading north to the Uptown Theater—a magnificent one-screen theater in Cleveland Park. We caught a matinee showing of The Adjustment Bureau, an enjoyable thriller starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
Considering all we’d packed into the day so far, you might have guessed that this is where the date ends. But we weren’t finished yet!
So, after the movie we popped home to grab some dinner and change into comfortable, warm clothing (remember, this was several weeks ago!), which was certainly needed for our final activity: a self-guided midnight monument tour. As explained in a previous post, visiting the majestic monuments at night is truly one of my all-time favorite DC dates.
As the last tourist group re-boarded its bus, Pius and I found ourselves alone on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. And there we sat, hand in hand, gazing down the National Mall at the WWII Memorial and the Washington Monument bathed in moonlight. What a perfect—and romantic—ending to our best DC date ever!
